Transactive Memory Systems: Exploring Task, Expertise And People (Tep) Unit Formation In Virtual Teams: Conceptualization And Scale Measurement Development

چکیده
Transactive Memory Systems (TMS) are important cognitive constructs to share knowledge and control and coordinate interdependent tasks in teams. The construction of Transactive Memory Systems involves a number of key phases that lead up to the actual formation of a team’s TMS. In particular, the development of Task-Expertise-People (TEP) units, form an essential part of the development of a team’s Transactive Memory System. At this stage very little is known of how TaskExpertise-People units are formed in virtual teams. This paper addresses this problem by following an inductive, quantitative method to develop a measurement scale for TEP formation in virtual teams. TEP formation is a crucial step in developing a high-quality TMS and thus team performance. This is important because many organizations achieve contemporary work using virtual teams and we do not have a measurement scale for TEP formation in virtual teams. Findings from this study indicate that the measurement scale for a TEP unit yields 1) reliable constructs and 2) valid construct items to successfully measure TEP formation.

Benefits of transactive memory systems in large-scale development
Context. Large-scale software development projects are those consisting of a large number of teams, maybe even spread across multiple locations, and working on large and complex software tasks. That means that neither a team member individually nor an entire team holds all the knowledge about the software being developed and teams have to communicate and coordinate their knowledge. Therefore, t...
متن کاملMeasuring transactive memory systems in the field: scale development and validation.
This study describes the development and validity testing of a field measure of transactive memory systems. Transactive memory systems are especially important for teams designed to leverage members' expertise, but field research has lagged because there are no adequate measures of the construct. The author developed and tested a 15-item scale in a laboratory sample of 124 teams, a field sample...
متن کاملExploring The Role Of ICT In The Formation Of Transactive Memory Systems In Virtual Teams
This paper is a research in progress. Virtual teams (VTs) are increasingly common in organizations, yet explicit research on VTs’ performance is relatively rare. One of the key challenges faced by individuals in VTs is the awareness of ‘who knows what’ and ‘who does what’ in the team. One of the solutions offered by past research in overcoming these key challenges is for teams to form Transacti...
متن کاملMeasuring the Performance of the Virtual Teams in Global Software Development Projects
The development teams who are geographically spread, culturally mixed and mainly depend on information and communication technology (ICT) for communication is defined as a global virtual teams (GVTs). Despite the advancement of technologies, achieving the efficient performance of GVTs remains a challenge. The reviewed literature has highlighted the importance of training and development, organi...

Building on Kozlwoski and Klein’s emergence framework, this research developed and tested a set of multilevel hypotheses regarding individual and team transactive memory processes in work teams. Literature from social psychology suggested hypotheses on how shared task interdependence influences individual expertise exchange. Social network theory suggested hypotheses that individual expertise e...
